Kalman Szentes, 78, of Chillicothe, died Thursday, May 18, 2006 at 7:15 P.M. at his home.
He was born on February 29, 1928 in Szany, Hungary the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Hovath Szentes. He married Jean C. Even on December 27, 1958 in Chillicothe.
Surviving are three chldren: Maria (and Tom) Geiger of Chillicothe Phillip Szentes of Chillicothe, and Roslyn Szentes-Stephens of Sunnyland; five grandchildren: Jake, Ollie, and Mason Geiger, Mary Jean Rusk and Ty Stephens; three sisters: Elza Szentes and Maria Szanyi both of Budapest, Hungary and Roszi Radvanyi of Gyor, Hungary; five nieces and nephews of Hungary; and five great nieces and nephews of Hungary.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one infant brother.
In 1956, with only a camera around his neck and suit on his back, he and a good friend rode bikes over the Austrian border. This was done at this mother's insistence to escape the Communist Revolution. He came to American through the help of the Catholic Church, which sponsored him. His cousin John Szentes helped him by finding a place to live and to work.
He was hired as an apprentice at Meister-Shane Company in Chillicothe. He also worked for J.T. Fennell Company, WABCO, and he retired after twenty-five years at Caterpillar, Inc.
He was proud to become an American Citizen on January 29, 1974 in Peoria, IL.
He was an active member of St. Edward Catholic Church in Chillicothe, IL.
Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, May 22, 2006 at 11:00 A.M. at his church. Fr. Cassidy will officiate. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 P.M. Sunday evening at Weber-Hurd Funeral Home in Chillicothe with a scripture service at 7:00 P.M. There will also be visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the Chillicothe City Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Edward Catholic Church, Rescue 33, or OSF Hospice.
