Mrs. Joyce W. Maddox, formerly of Chillicothe, the daughter of C.A. and Lois Henson Ward was born November 15, 1942 in Chicago Illinois and left our world on April 21, 2022 at the age of 79.
She is preceded in death by her parents, one child, Diedre in 1974, her husband George H. Arjes in 1977, and John K. Maddox in 2005.
Surviving are her children Ward (Amy), Kale (Shellie) and Raegan Arjes-Maddox. She is also survived by 8 Grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
She had many roles throughout life: Daughter; Cousin; College student at Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa; RA at Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois; Wife; Production Assistant at WEEK in East Peoria; Secretary at CFD in Chillicothe; President and member of VFW Post 4999 Ladies Auxiliary in Chillicothe; Pet Mom; Room Mom, Baseball Mom, Band Mom, Track Mom, Military Mom, and then finally Mom-in-Law. She was always Mom – to all the kids who knew her. She is also known and loved as a fierce friend and that little feisty redhead – all 5’2 (and don’t forget the ¾!) of her.
Her final role in this life was cancer patient for 2 years. She endured countless procedures, tests, hospital stays, medications, organ removal – doctors and more doctors. On April 14th Joyce would now embrace a role that is hard to label, one that takes courage, resolve and a lot of dignity. She decided it was time to stop the fight and wait for the train to come carry her home – and one can only imagine that her eyebrow was raised, her smirk firmly in position and her finger pointed at it saying something like ‘well It’s about time you showed up!" as it came while she was sleeping.
She was the strongest woman we knew and are very proud to have been able to call her OUR Mom. We already miss you horribly and we love you Momma.
Donations can be made to the ASPCA, St. Jude’s Children Hospital, or The VFW Post 4999 Auxiliary in her memory. Cremation rites have been accorded by the Neptune Society. Please join us at the VFW Post 4999 In Chilli on May 29. 2-5pm for a fun Joyce Celebration.
