Palma Lee (Woodcock) Pittman, 96, of East Peoria, passed away at her home in East Peoria on Friday, November 6, 2015.
She was born on September 2, 1919 in Canton to Scott and Dorothy (Pollitt) Woodcock. She married James Pittman on January 8, 1945 in Grand Ridge. He preceded her in death on November 26, 1954.
Palma was also preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by two children, Charles Pittman of Mesa, Az, and Dorothy (Melvin) Willis of Peoria; four grandchildren, James WIllis, Steven Willis, Travis Pittman, and Amy Treffers; nine great-grandchildren, Cody Willis, Katlin Willis, Hailey Russell, Kelsey Russell, Sierra Willis, Trevor Willis, Erick Peterson, Tyler Treffers, and Nathan Pittman; and one great-great-grandchild, Ryan Willis.
Palma graduated from the University of Illinois in 1943 with a Bachelors Degree in Education and went on to receive a Masters Degree in Education. She taught at Limestone Community High School in the 1940's, Roosevelt Junior High from the 1950's to the mid 1970's, and most recently, Peoria High School, from where she retired in 1981. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, National Education Association, Illinois Education Association, Peoria Area Retired Teachers Association, was a past President of the Peoria Women's Club and St. Francis Medical Center Auxiliary Service Guild, Peoria Business and Professional Women's Club, Jubilee Business and Professional Women's Club, and volunteered in the gift shop at OSF St. Francis Medical Center.
A funeral service for Palma will be held on Saturday, November 14, 2015 at First United Methodist Church in Peoria at 10:00 AM. Pastor Carolyn Carnes will officiate. Visitation will be held at Cumerford-Hurd Funeral Home on Friday, November 13, 2015 from 5:00-7:00 PM, and at the church one hour prior to the funeral service. Burial will be held in Springdale Cemetery.
