Helen Massy (Tapp) Peters, 104, of Chillicothe died Saturday February 27, 2016, at Heritage Healthcare in Chillicothe.
She was born April 11, 1911 in Linton, Indiana, the daughter of Overton Durastus Tapp and Clara Belle (Massy) Tapp. She married Wilbert E. "Pete" Peters on September 16, 1934. He preceded her in death on February 1,1971. She was also preceded in death by her two sons, James W. "Jim" Peters, and Ronald E. "Ronnie" Peters.
Surviving are: five grandchildren, Tim (Flecia) Peters of Peoria, Jamie (Bruce) Benoit of Peoria, Jody Berry of Houston, TX, Jaci Peters of Rome, and Tobi (Sandy) Peters of Chillicothe; 13 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren ; and her nieces and nephews.
Helen went to beauty school after High School and started her working career as a beautician. She met her future husband at a dance in downtown Peoria. They continued to enjoy dancing and bowling throughout their marriage. Helen and Pete Peters opened their business, Peters Floral and Garden Center in 1936. After her husband died in 1971, Helen continued to operate the business with her two sons until 2006, achieving 70 years of business success.
Helen was a member of the VFW Post #4999 Ladies Auxiliary, an emeritus member of Altrusa International, Plymouth Congregational Church, Chillicothe Stamp Association and Chillicothe Chamber of Commerce.
She lived in her home along the Illinois River since 1965, enjoying watching the river activities with many barges and boaters waving and sounding their horns to let her know that they were there. Her time at Heritage Healthcare in Chillicothe was pleasant with many friends and staff taking great care of her.
Family and Friends are invited to her graveside service on Friday March 4, 2016 at 1:00 pm at the City Cemetery in Chillicothe, IL.
