Mr. George J. Hawley of New Boston formerly of Chillicothe died on Thursday, July 16, 2015 at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. He was 73.
George was born on April 3, 1942 in Minneapolis, MN the son of Alfred and Elizabeth (Zinn) Hawley. He attended and graduated from Princeville High School in 1960, where he held the pole vault record for 21 years.
George proudly served his country from 1960 to 1964 in the U.S. Air Force. After his discharge of the Air Force he joined the Chillicothe American Legion Post 9 and he was past commander of the Lacon Walter Guede American Legion Post 593.
He worked and retired from Caterpillar, Inc as a supervisor in 1995.
George was a member of St. Edward Catholic Church prior to moving to New Boston. He was instrumental in the development of CRHP. He was also a 3rd Degree of the St. Jude Knights of Columbus Council #4333.
On December 20, 1975 he married Janet E. Adams in Chillicothe. Surviving is his wife, Janet of New Boston; a daughter, Dawn (Denis) Coventry of Chillicothe; two grandchildren, Heather Coventry of Rome and Sonya Coventry of Chillicothe; three great grandchildren, Brynden Coventry, Jaelynn Coventry, and Calissa Graham; two sisters, Marie Lauber of Chillicothe and Sally (Rich) VanDeVoorde of East Moline; and two brothers, William "Bill" (Margaret) Hawley of Lacon and Jim (Dee Dee) Hawley of Sparland. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Dustin, a brother Robert "Bob" and a sister Patricia Rosa.
George enjoyed to hunt and fish, he loved the outdoors. He liked telling jokes and being with his friends, family, especially his grandchildren.
Friends and family are cordially invited to a funeral mass at St. Edward Catholic Church in Chillicothe on Saturday, July 25, 2015 at 11:00 am. Fr. Keith Walder will officiate. A visitation will be held on two hours prior to the service time at the Church. Burial will be held at the Chillicothe City Cemetery with Military Honors. Memorial contributions in his name may be made to the American Heart Association or to the Donor's Choice.
