Elinor Lawson

Elinor Mae Lawson, 91, of Rome, Illinois passed away on July 4, 2019 at Apostolic Christian Skylines in Peoria.
Elinor was born in Chillicothe on May 20, 1928, the daughter of Frank C. and Opal (Salter) Anderson. She married Elmer A. Lawson Jr. in Chillicothe at First Methodist Church on November 23, 1947. He preceded her in death on January 22, 1998. Elinor was also preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Glenn (Roberta), Clifford, and Frank Anderson.
Elinor graduated from Chillicothe High School in 1946 and began her first job making sodas at Moffat's Drugstore. She also worked at the Santa Fe Roundhouse in Chillicothe and for Central National Bank in Peoria before marrying and joining Lawson's Grocery and Hardware family business eventually becoming the corporation Secretary-Treasurer. In her spare time she was an excellent seamstress, enjoyed quilting, playing pinochle with her card club, and breakfast every Saturday with friends. She traveled independently as far as Guam, participated in activities at Pearce Community Center and enjoyed attending plays and band concerts. She volunteered as a greeter and served on committees at First United Methodist Church in Chillicothe. She was witty and always gave good advice.
Surviving are two children, Craig Lawson of Rome and Gayle Lay (Bill) of Suffolk, VA. Elinor has two grandchildren, Montgomery A. Lay (Kathleen) of Richmond, VA and Geoffrey W. Lay of Redwood City, CA and five great-grandchildren. Montgomery and Kathleen's children, Samantha and Gabrielle Lay, Abigail and Jacob Donahue and Geoffrey's son, Rigel Lay.
In addition, she has 12 nieces and nephews who survive and two who preceded her in death.
The family would like to thank everyone at Apostolic Christian Skylines, Apostolic Christian Skylines Home Care, and Unity Point Hospice for the faithful and loving care they provided Elinor over the past few months.
Elinor loved dogs and her suggestion is to make a contribution to the dog breed rescue organization of your choice in lieu of flowers. Other memorials could be made to First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund in Chillicothe.
Services will be held on Wednesday, July 10, 2019 at 11am at First United Methodist Church in Chillicothe. Reverend Ron Martz will officiate. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Cremation rites will be accorded following the services.
