Doris Underwood

January 17, 1925 — April 4, 2021

Doris E. Underwood, age 96, of Chillicothe, passed away on Easter Sunday, April 4, 2021 at Heartis Village in Peoria.

Doris Elizabeth Faust Underwood, the daughter of Dearl and Emma Elizabeth (Lawrence) Faust, was born in Greenville, AL on January 17, 1925.  She was the fourth child of eight children.  Her parents and all seven siblings preceded her in death.  She married Robert W. Underwood on January 20, 1947 in Pascagoula, MS.  He preceded her in death in July of 1997.

Surviving are her daughter, June Bobette (Ronald) Noe of Chillicothe, IL; two grandchildren, Craig Joseph (Gina) Noe of Henry, IL and Kendra Elizabeth (David) Draksler of East Peoria, IL; five great-grandchildren, Joshua Robert Noe, Jessica Ashbeck, Lindsay Glenn, Sidney Elizabeth and Brandon Draksler; and five great-great-grandchildren, Kenlee, Hannah and Celia Ashbeck, and Nora and Easton Glenn.

Doris’s family was very important to her and her home was always the gathering place for her family visiting from Alabama, family friends and her cherished grandchildren.  Her grandchildren and their friends loved spending the weekend with her.  She was a Southern lady who never lost her Southern accent.  She was a Charter Member of Rome Baptist Church where she and Bob were very instrumental in getting the church started in Rome over 60 years ago.  Her faith in Jesus Christ was very strong and she shared her love for him with family and friends.  She also set an example for her family by sharing her beliefs and guiding those whom had questions.

Doris loved to travel and visit with her family in Alabama, often driving there herself well into her 80’s.  She and her sister, Alice Williams, also of Chillicothe, made many trips to visit family.  They were dubbed as the “Rocket Sisters” by their siblings for making such good time on the road!  She was a wonderful cook, making mouthwatering dishes and delicious cakes and pies.  In her mid 80’s, she decided that she would learn to quilt.  Doris taught herself how to make beautiful hand stitched quilts just like her mother used to make.  Each quilt was stitched with love for her family.

She was loved and cherished by our family and her friends and our hearts are hurting. But we know that she is rejoicing in Heaven where she was greeted by her parents, siblings and her husband.  She leaves behind a number of nieces and nephews who loved her sense of humor, laughter and spending time with her.

Services will be held on Friday, April 9, 2021 at 1pm at Weber-Hurd Funeral Home in Chillicothe with visitation held one hour prior to the service.  Please follow the social distancing guidelines and wearing of masks will be required.  Pastor Philip Taylor will be officiating.  Burial will be at Chillicothe City Cemetery following the services.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to her church.
