Darlene Hartwig

February 26, 1928 — February 15, 2021

Our mother, Darlene L. Hartwig, passed away on February 15th, 2021. She was almost 93 years old and died peacefully in her sleep. Because of the COVID virus we are unable to have a normal visitation and funeral service. There will be a celebration of life in the future when we can all safely gather.

She was born in Belgrade, Nebraska on February 26, 1928 to Weedie L. and Fannie E. (Milby) Elmore. The family moved to Illinois when she was a child. She married Dermott (Bud) Hartwig and moved to Putnam, Illinois. She was mother to 3 boys - Leonard, Stanley, and Jim. She worked at local restaurants and was a school bus driver. They lived in Putnam until they retired and 'downsized homes,' and then moved to Chillicothe, Illinois.

Before going into assisted living at Reflections Memory Care in Washington, Illinois, Darlene attended the St. Edwards Catholic Church in Chillicothe, Illinois.

In retirement, Darlene and her husband Bud enjoyed travel and eating out. They did many trips camping in trailers as well as trips to Hawaii and Alaska. She loved her freedom by driving on road trips or just going to garage sales. Of course grandkids were often taken along. She had a fascination with angels and collected many over the years. Now, she is one of our angels.

She loved her husband, Dermott (Bud) and they were married for over 50 years before he passed away on August 22, 1995. I am not sure she ever was happy without Bud. They enjoyed over 20 years of retirement together.

She leaves behind two children, Stanley (Linda) Hartwig of Sun City Center, FL, James (Barbara) Hartwig of Ruskin FL, 4 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Bud, her son, Leonard, her five brothers, William, Rollin, Forest, Willard and Gerald, and her sister Alma.

Memorials may be sent in Darlene's name to Alzheimer's Association or Helping Hands in Chillicothe.

She is deeply loved and will be greatly missed.
